The Andrei Sakharov Foundation is gravely concerned about the arrest of Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Russian journalist and political activist. He was detained and sentenced to 15 days of prison for allegedly disobeying a police order and was denied due process.
We are concerned that Mr. Kara-Murza may be investigated and charged with a more serious offense related to his long-time criticism of Russia on mainstream news media and in the US Congress, and most notably, his recent outspoken condemnation of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
In 2015 and 2017, Kara-Murza suffered two emergency hospitalizations as the result of poisoning traced to Russian state agents. We fear his health and safety are in great danger.
We call for the immediate release of Vladimir Kara-Murza and an end to arbitrary detention of critics of Russia's human rights violations and the war in Ukraine.
